Gamification Overview: Leaderboard and Badges

This tutorial is an overview of the gamification features in Foundation LMS. We will review Badges and the Leaderboard from both the Admin and Student perspectives.

1. Click “Gamification”, then “Badges”.

2. Students accumulate Points by completing Courses. The Course Point value is set in the Course Builder. More on that later… When Students obtain enough Points they earn a Badge. When they earn enough Badges they achieve the next Rank. There are three Ranks that can be achieved by Students: Bronze

5. If we change the Number of Badges per Rank, the number of Badges on the page will change to match the new total. Students will now have to earn this number of Badges to achieve the next Rank.

6. Likewise, if we change the number of Points per Badge, the new Point value will be displayed above the Badges. Students will now have to earn this number of Points in order to earn a Badge.

7. If you make any changes to these parameters, Students’ earned achievements will be recalculated to reflect the new settings. Click “SAVE” to save your changes.

8. Now we’ll go to the Course Builder to add Points to a Course. Click “Courses”, then “Online”.

9. Locate your Course, then click the “Builder” icon.

10. Note the Course Points value is currently set to zero. Click the pencil icon to set a new Course Points value.

11. Click “UPDATE” to commit your change, or click “CANCEL” to cancel without updating.

12. Now let’s take a look at the Leaderboard. Click “Gamification”, then “Leaderboard”.

13. The Leaderboard shows a list of the top ten Students, their total number of completed Courses,

16. Now we’ll take a look at the Leaderboard from the Student’s perspective. While signed in as a Student, click Leaderboard.

17. Note that this Student does not have any Points. They are not in the top ten list, but they still appear beneath the top ten with their relevant info so they can see how they match up to their peers.

18. Now we are signed in as a Student who is in the top ten. Note that we see her in first place on the Leaderboard. But what if she doesn’t want to appear on the Leaderboard?

19. Students can opt out of the Leaderboard in their Profile. To access the Student Profile, click on the Student name, then click My Profile.

20. Toggle to enable “Hide in Leaderboard”. This will remove the Student from the Leaderboard list.

21. Now when we go back to the Leaderboard, we can see that this Student is no longer on the list.

22. Now we’ll take a look at the My Achievements page. Click My Achievements.

23. Here we can see the Student’s Rank, total number of completed Courses, and total Score, or accumulated Points. We can also see the number of Badges the Student has earned in their current Rank, and the number of Badges required to move to the next Rank.
